Frequently Asked Questions

Among the frequently asked questions:

Do I really have to go to the dentist every six months?
Only if you want to keep your teeth all your life! Only two generations ago, the average Quebecker didn’t have one tooth left by the age of forty. Today, people want to live up to one hundred years and keep their teeth till the very end. Dentists must take care of teeth and gums and ensure good mastication. In fact, six months is an approximate figure. Some patients should come every three months and others, only once a year.

Are electric toothbrushes more efficient than ordinary manual toothbrushes?
It depends on the user. Someone who has a good technique can do well with a traditional toothbrush. Many people find that an electric toothbrush makes it easier to take care of their teeth. It’s a matter of personal choice.

Do whitening toothpastes and chewing gum really work?
Yes, but not as well as professional whitening. These products can effectively remove stains. You must be cautious if you have rather thin gums: the acidity levels of these toothpastes can cause your gums to recede.

Here’s my little secret: the best way to remove stains and bleach your teeth at home is to mix sodium bicarbonate (yes! good old baking soda) with hydrogen peroxide, available at your pharmacy. Believe me, it does the job!

Do whitening products destroy tooth enamel?
No. These products break the proteins that color the tooth without affecting its structure. Teeth can become more sensitive in the short term but not in the long term.

Do soft drinks can cause dental erosion?
Soft drinks can scour floors, so imagine what they can do to your teeth! I know a few people who have lost more than one tooth because of these. Some of them have had to undergo major treatments. Why? Hyperacidity and the high level of sugar are the culprits. Even though colas can be stimulating, they also lead to the demineralization of teeth.

Is it true that a unextracted wisdom tooth can decay?
Some people should have their wisdom teeth removed because not doing so could seriously compromise their health. Their wisdom teeth could rot.

There are three ways to handle the problem:

  1. Treat only the teeth that hurt.
  2. Take preventive action and fix what could be harmful in the long term.
  3. Rejuvenate the person's oral health. Here’s why: most often, my patients prefer to have their wisdom teeth removed to facilitate cleaning or avoid having the other teeth overlap because of the pressure.

Can the nerve be damaged and is it possible I will be paralyzed if you take out these teeth?
Yes, but in only rare cases. After a complete exam, we can decide not to go ahead if the intervention is too risky.

Can untreated cavities lead to sinusitis or heart disease?
Sinusitis, maybe, but the tooth decay must be very deep. On the other hand, most recent research shows that people with gum disease have a higher risk of contracting cardiovascular problems.

Does frequent brushing lead to dental problems or cavities?
Absolutely not! But inappropriate brushing can wear away your teeth and gums. If you’re not sure about the proper way to brush your teeth, ask your dentist. A reminder is always useful.
